The Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) says recreational boat owners need to take special precautions with storage of E10 (10 percent ethanol) gas, and review their insurance policy to make sure the boat is properly covered. Consider ice and freeze boat insurance coverage: While the ability to store a boat inside a heated building over the long, cold winter is wonderful, consider what would happen if a snowstorm knocked out power and the source of heat died. Ice forming inside nonwinterized engine blocks can lead to big repair bills.

Step 1: Change your oil

Any water or acids that have gotten into your oil can corrode the engine. Change the filter and flush it out so that no water remains, then add the new oil.

Step 2: Refresh the coolant system

Drain out the current coolant, then flush with water. Fill with fresh antifreeze, but make sure you’ve diluted it to the manager’s specification.

Step 3: Spray with fogging oil

Get your engine turning over without starting it, and while it’s still turning over spray fogging oil into the carburetor or through the spark plug holes, whichever way your manual instructs your to do.

Step 4: Remove drive belts

When kept under tension for longer periods of time, your drive belts may crack under the stress. Loosen or remove them entirely before placing your boat in storage.

Step 5: Grease the steering mechanism

Greasing the steering and control mechanisms will make sure that these are moving smoothly when it comes time to take your boat out again. Make sure the joints are well covered with grease.

Distressed sailboat off Cape Breton successfully towed to Sydney

A distressed sailboat off the coast of Cape Breton has been successfully towed to Sydney, where everyone was found to be OK including the captain, who refused to leave his boat, even during the tow.

A Marine Atlantic ferry helped assist with the rescue of the man and his dog.

The MV Highlanders set sail Monday at 11:45 a.m. AT from Sydney, N.S., on its way to Port aux Basques, N.L., when the captain of the ferry got a call from the coast guard about a sailboat in distress about 20 nautical miles north of Sydney.

The ferry then shifted course to assist the craft, he said.
